Unresolved Problems Study Guide

I. N Ireland

History:

First Ireland was controlled by the Celtic, but then was taken over by England.  The Irish people then fell into poverty while the English Protestants got richer.  The Irish really started to dislike the English so violence erupted.

Current political state:

Ireland is still controlled by the English.  The Irish still really do not like the English and are trying with all their will to drive them out of their county.  Violence is still erupting in terrorist acts on one another.

Extremism:

There are extremists from both sides which reek havoc on the other side of extremists.  Both sides of extremists are violent and think they are right.  The extremists are so bad it could be called terrorism.

Reunification:

To reunify the Irish mean kick the English out of Ireland.  The Protestants do not like this idea of kicking the English out hat is why there is havoc.  The Protestants really have the edge too because 2/3 of the people in N. Ireland are Protestant.

III. Pacific Rim/Trade

History:

The trade imbalance started out with Japan needing help with rebuilding their country from the US.  The US started to trade a ton of good with Japan, while the US made money.  Not until year later did Japan start trading more good to the US then the other way around.

Trade balance:

Now that Japan is trading with the US the US is giving money to Japan in return for Japans goods.  The US likes Japans good so they keep giving money for Japans stuff.  It is balanced because the US is addicted to Japans stuff while Japan is addicted to the US’s money.

IV. National Debt

National debt vs. deficit:

The nation debt is a huge sum of money that will take forever to be paid off, if ever paid off, while the deficit is another large sum of money needing to be paid off.  The debt keeps increasing because of the deficit (interest) on the debt. If the US is able to pay off the deficit there is still the debt to worry about.

Magnitude of national debt:

The debt is a big deal because as the debt goes up so does the deficit.  As the deficit goes up so does the debt.  While both of these go up, so does the taxes of US citizens.

Effect on future:

If there isn’t something done about the debt pretty soon the taxes are just going to keep going up.  If the government takes all the money the people make, then the people will not make any more money.  This means an end to the paying of the debt.

VII. AIDS

Basic facts from hand-out:

AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.  There are over 136,000 cases of AIDS in the US. Every 14 minutes someone becomes infected with the AIDS virus.

Treatment and research:

There really is not treatment for AIDS right now.  Scientists are working on an AIDS vaccine right now though.  AIDS researchers think the AIDS vaccine is about ten years away.

History:

The AIDS virus is thought to originate in Africa.  The AIDS virus spread so quickly that it scared many medical specialists.  The first AIDS case was seen in a jungle by a Danish doctor.

Causes and prevention:

The causes of AIDS is from people having sex with others who have the AIDS virus, transferring blood, or sharing needles.  To prevent getting AIDS is to do exactly opposite of what was just stated.  The reason people die from AIDS is because it breaks down the immune system which makes even a common cold extremely bad.
